Digital Transgender Archive
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
He is wearing a white dress; turning away from the viewer slightly, with dark curly hair. A publicity photograph, signed in ink by Terry Gardener. Terry Gardener and Alan Haynes were two of the original stars of 'We were in the Forces', one of the first touring drag revues which toured the UK successfully from 1944 into the early 1950s. Terry's hair and make-up in this photograph is clearly influenced by the British film star Margaret Lockwood, at the height of her fame in this period (James Gardiner)
