An actor in drag wearing a light dress and styled hair, poses in front of a black background. Photographic postcard by Vernon Studio, 1921.
Vernon Studio. 322 St. Paul's Road, Highbury Corner, N. Very sincerely Stan Bennett. Splinters, 1921
The man in drag (Stan Bennett?) gazes at the viewer and points his toes to the ground with his left foot. The card is autographed by Stan Bennett, one of the original members of the 'Splinters' troupe of ex-servicemen, who, having gained experience acting in drag with World War I concert parties, organized themselves into a commercial act and enjoyed great success performing at music hall well into the 1930s. Inscribed in green ink 'Splinters 1921'
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photographs of military, naval, and prisoner-of-war camp drag.
