Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
He rests his chin on his clasped hands; looking pensively at the viewer. He is wearing a white t-shirt and has styled hair with almost a quiff. Danny La Rue out of costume, mid 1960s. He often appeared on and off-stage in male clothing, preferring to see himself as 'a comic in a frock' rather than a drag queen. Extremely reticent about his homosexuality, he had a life-long relationship with his manager Jack Hanson, who pre-deceased him, and with whom he is buried in Kensal Green cemetery, London (James Gardiner)
