Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
They are in drag playing characters in the "potted" (condensed) 1911 play by Pelissier based on the 1901 novel Count Hannibal: a romance of the court of France by Stanley J. Weyman. H.G. Pelissier (1874-1913 ) was an enormously influential figure in British popular theatre for a decade before his premature death at the age of thirty-nine. His troupe 'The Follies', presented a long run of satirical musical plays, in which he acted as producer, composer and performer. These burlesques often featured cross-dressed characters, and here Pelissier himself appears in Elizabethan finery as 'The Lady of Vrillac'
